Why Sweet Music Studio includes virtual group classes with its 60-minute private lesson program.

Why Sweet Music Studio includes virtual group classes with its 60-minute private lesson program.

One of the things I've learned over more than 45 years of teaching music is that private lessons and playing with other musicians serve two very different purposes.

Private instruction gives us time to concentrate on you. We work on technique, repertoire, musical understanding, and the particular challenges you're encountering with your instrument.

But music doesn't end when the private lesson is over.

Some of the most enjoyable and valuable learning happens when musicians explore tunes together, discover unfamiliar musical traditions, and develop the skills needed to play as part of a group.

That's why I've decided to make virtual group classes an important part of the Sweet Music Studio experience.

When you enroll in our 60-minute private lesson program, you automatically receive access to all four weekly virtual group classes at no additional charge.

No separate group class tuition. No additional enrollment. Just more opportunities to learn and enjoy music.

Four Days. Four Musical Adventures.

Our virtual group classes are hosted through the Sweet Music Studio YouTube channel, with each session beginning at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

Here's what we're offering:

Mondays: Mandolin

The mandolin is one of the most versatile instruments in traditional music, finding a home in everything from bluegrass and old-time music to Irish tunes, folk, and beyond.

Our Monday sessions explore melodies, rhythm, picking techniques, accompaniment, and repertoire. We'll work on developing the skills that help mandolin players become comfortable participating in traditional music gatherings.

Wednesdays: Klezmer

Klezmer is a wonderfully expressive musical tradition with distinctive melodies, rhythms, ornamentation, and an extraordinary range of musical influences.

Wednesday sessions introduce students to traditional klezmer repertoire, phrasing, interpretation, and the musical characteristics that give this music its unique personality.

It's also an opportunity to explore a tradition you might not encounter in your regular private lessons.

Thursdays: Celtic

Jigs, reels, airs, hornpipes, and the wonderful world of traditional Irish and Scottish music!

Our Thursday sessions explore traditional repertoire, rhythm, ornamentation, and the musical conventions that make Celtic sessions such an enjoyable way to play with other musicians.

We'll also work on developing the listening skills and familiarity with tunes that can help prepare students to participate in local traditional music sessions.

Fridays: Bluegrass

What better way to finish the week than with bluegrass?

Friday sessions explore traditional bluegrass repertoire, rhythm, accompaniment, chord progressions, and improvisation.

We'll look at how different instruments work together, how to support another musician's solo, and how to become more comfortable participating in a bluegrass jam.

How Do Virtual Group Classes Work?

Our group classes take place through YouTube, so you can participate from the comfort of your own home.

I'll lead each session with demonstrations, instruction, and musical material appropriate to the class. Students can follow along with their instruments, ask questions through the live chat, and work through tunes and techniques as they're presented.

Because YouTube doesn't allow everyone to play together simultaneously in the same way an in-person gathering does, these classes are structured around guided instruction and playing along with the instructor.

Think of them as an opportunity to build a shared musical vocabulary.

You'll become familiar with tunes, develop your listening skills, explore different styles, and gradually build the confidence to participate in music-making with others.

Where recordings are available, you'll also be able to revisit the material and practice between sessions.

Why Include Group Classes With Private Lessons?

Because I don't believe music education should be limited to the time we spend together in a private lesson.

A student might come to me wanting to learn bluegrass mandolin, but discover an unexpected love of Irish music. A fiddler might become fascinated with klezmer ornamentation. A guitarist might find that studying traditional accompaniment completely changes the way they approach rhythm.

Exposure to different musical traditions makes us more versatile, curious, and capable musicians.

It also helps students understand how their instruments function in different musical settings.

And perhaps most importantly, it encourages adults to think of music as something we do together, rather than something we practice alone.

What's Included With Your Private Lessons?

Sweet Music Studio offers three private lesson options:

Private LessonTuitionGroup Classes
30 minutes$45Not included
45 minutes$60Not included
60 minutes$95All four weekly classes included

The 60-minute program provides a full hour of individualized instruction each week, along with access to our Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday virtual group classes.

That's up to four additional opportunities each week to explore music beyond your private lesson, all included in your regular tuition.

Students enrolled in the 60-minute program are automatically signed up for the group classes once their private lesson enrollment and payment are complete.

You don't have to attend every group class. Participate in the traditions that interest you, explore something unfamiliar, or join us throughout the week.

The choice is yours.

You Don't Have to Be an Expert

Our virtual group classes aren't intended exclusively for accomplished musicians.

They're designed to encourage learning, exploration, and participation.

If you're a beginner, you may spend more time listening, following demonstrations, and becoming familiar with the music. As your skills develop, you'll discover that you can participate more fully.

If you're an experienced musician, you may find opportunities to expand your repertoire, explore unfamiliar styles, and approach familiar material from a different perspective.

There's always something new to discover.

Private Instruction Is Personal. Music Is Social.

I've spent much of my life playing with other musicians, from classical chamber music to bluegrass bands and traditional music sessions.

And while I value the discipline and individual attention of private instruction, some of my fondest musical memories have come from simply sitting down with other people and playing tunes.

That's the spirit I want to encourage at Sweet Music Studio.

Our virtual group classes are a starting point. They offer a way to learn together, discover new music, and prepare for the experience of playing with others, wherever those opportunities might arise.

I hope they'll encourage students to seek out local sessions, make new musical friends, and become part of the larger community of musicians around them.

Because ultimately, the goal isn't simply to become better at playing an instrument.

It's to enjoy making music.

Mandolin Lessons at Sweet Music Studio: Learning to Play Together

There's something wonderful about the mandolin. It's small enough to take just about anywhere, versatile enough to find a home in dozens of musical traditions, and has a voice that can be bright and cheerful one moment, warm and expressive the next. Whether you're drawn to bluegrass, traditional Irish music, old-time fiddle tunes, folk, or simply want to learn an instrument you've always admired, the mandolin is a terrific place to start.

At Sweet Music Studio, I offer private mandolin lessons for beginners through advanced players, along with a virtual group class designed to bring adult musicians together to learn, practice, and develop their playing.

I've been playing and teaching mandolin for more than 45 years. My musical background includes bluegrass bands, traditional Irish sessions, folk music, classical training, and years of performing and recording with other musicians. Along the way, I've learned that some of the most valuable musical education happens not in a practice room, but when people sit down together and play.

That's the philosophy behind my teaching.

Private Mandolin Lessons

Every student comes to the mandolin with a different background. Some have played guitar or another stringed instrument for years. Others are picking up an instrument for the very first time. Some want to learn bluegrass solos, while others would be perfectly happy sitting in a circle of musicians playing traditional tunes on a Sunday afternoon.

Private lessons give us an opportunity to work on what interests you, at a pace that makes sense.

Depending on your experience and musical goals, lessons can include:

  • Getting comfortable with the instrument, tuning, picking, and basic technique.

  • Learning chords, rhythm, and accompaniment.

  • Developing right-hand technique, timing, and tone.

  • Playing melodies and traditional fiddle tunes.

  • Bluegrass flatpicking, improvisation, and understanding chord progressions.

  • Learning to play by ear as well as reading music.

  • Building a repertoire of tunes you can share with other musicians.

  • Developing the confidence to participate in a jam session.

I don't believe every student needs to follow the same musical path. The important thing is to develop a solid foundation while making music you genuinely enjoy.

Private lessons are currently offered online while we work out arrangements for returning to in-person instruction.

Why Playing With Other Adults Matters

One thing I've noticed over many years of teaching is that adults often learn an instrument in isolation. They buy a mandolin, find some instructional material, practice at home, and gradually build up a collection of tunes. But eventually, many reach a point where something is missing.

They need other musicians.

Music is, after all, a conversation. You learn to listen, respond, follow someone else's lead, find your place in the rhythm, and occasionally take a chance on something you haven't played before.

You also discover that everybody makes mistakes, even people who have been playing for decades!

For adults especially, having a community of fellow learners can make an enormous difference. It gives you a reason to keep practicing, an opportunity to share what you've learned, and the encouragement that comes from knowing other people are working through the same challenges.

I've spent many years participating in and organizing traditional music sessions, including a long-running Sunday session that brought students and experienced musicians together. Those gatherings reinforced something I've always believed: learning music should lead toward making music with other people.

That's why Sweet Music Studio offers more than individual instruction.

Our Virtual Mandolin Group Class

In addition to private lessons, I offer a virtual mandolin group class through the Sweet Music Studio YouTube channel.

The group class is intended to complement individual study while creating a shared learning experience for adults interested in the mandolin.

We'll explore traditional tunes, playing techniques, rhythm, accompaniment, and the musical skills that help prepare you to play with others. The goal isn't simply to learn another song. It's to become a more comfortable, confident, and capable musician.

And because the class is virtual, you don't need to live in Western Massachusetts to participate.

Whether you're returning to an instrument you put aside years ago, exploring mandolin after playing something else, or just beginning your musical journey, you're welcome to join us.

It's Never Too Late to Start

One of the pleasures of teaching adults is the range of experiences they bring to music. Some have wanted to play an instrument since childhood but never had the opportunity. Others are rediscovering something they enjoyed years ago. Still others are looking for a creative activity that gets them away from their daily routines and connects them with new people.

You don't need to be preparing for a concert or aspiring to become a professional musician to take lessons.

You can learn simply because you love the sound of the mandolin, enjoy traditional music, or want to experience the pleasure of playing alongside others.

There is a great deal of satisfaction in learning your first tune, discovering how two instruments fit together, or realizing that you can finally keep up with a piece that once seemed impossibly fast.

And there is always something new to learn.

Come Play With Us!

Sweet Music Studio welcomes new mandolin students for private online instruction and our virtual group class.

My hope is that students will develop not only the technical skills to play the mandolin, but also the confidence and enthusiasm to make music with others. Whether that eventually means joining a local jam, playing with friends, or simply sharing a few favorite tunes with another musician, that's where the real enjoyment begins.

Keep playing, keep learning, and most importantly, play with other people!
